Mission

The purpose of the Africatown Redevelopment Corporation Board is to revitalize housing, preserve history, and attract/develop commerce in the area known as the Africatown Historic District in Mobile, Alabama.

The Africatown Wide House

Most Africans in Africatown were reported to have lived in “wide houses”, as opposed to the more prevalent shotgun house. The wide house was approximately 30ft to 32ft. wide and 40ft to 50ft long. They traditionally had two front doors. Though they are not high styled classics of architecture, the houses in Africatown are components of the total character of the area. They should be restored and preserved as monuments to the unsung craftsmen who erected them. Support must now be garnered from local preservation and community development agencies to fund restoration and preservation projects in Africatown so these houses and this history can be saved. ~Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, 1985
